The reason I asked if you had Photoshop is because you can convert video to .gif with it. That's how I made my AV.

Do you have Imageready? It comes with Photoshop. Use that program and open the AVI you're trying to convert. Afterwards, select the range you want to import and such (best thing to do is choose every 2 frame to make the gif go faster). Select OK. Next step is the animation palette where all the frames are shown. Select the first frame and scroll down to the last one. Shift-click it and look at the bottom of the frame. You should see a number with a decimal. Click that and select either 0.0 or 0.1 to make the gif go smoothly. Lastly, click File>Save Optimized As and then that's it.

I use Video Avatar! It is a simple and quickly tool! I've been using it for a long time and haven't any problem with it!

Another good tool is VidGif!

Info from site:VidGIF is a tool for converting selected video file to animation GIF formats. By using VidGIF you can create amusing avatars, animated logos for your website. It’s also useful for webmasters who want to place graphic on the website.
VidGIF converts video of any format that could be watched on PC. It supports AVI, WMV, MOV, MPEG and other video files. VidGIF allows one having control over width, height and FPS of GIF animation. But note that the smaller size your video has the better quality of animation GIF you will get.
