I've never eally followed it, but i have seen a few shows. I read on the front page that a lucha legend died recently, but that he had won a few masks throughout his career. That baffled me.

Wrestling is all coreographed right; Storylines and outcomes are all predetermined? If thats the case how does a wrestler keep himself from losing his mask(supposedly the biggest dishonor to a lucha of the mexican sport.) Are these outcomes planned as well or do these matches become "shoot" fights?

Well, I don't really know about that, I guess it is a way of showing the guy that he needs to start doing a good job. I mean, the Title Changes are scheduled by booking, so I guess it is also with masks here, I suppose they are booked, because in all honesty, luchadores that are scheduled to be big NEVER lose the mask, and the one who loses is very often is released or rehashed.

Thats a good question. I have been a lucha fan for a while 20 years or so and i dont really know the right answer. Well i can tell you the most popular guy will most likely(not always) win and the guy who looses may get paid a bonus. Many times a guy who is going to retire will loose his mask to a younger wrestler passing the torch type of thing. I have a friend who lost his mask just because he wanted to relaunch himself as a new character.

Yes, the mask matches are decided by the bookers. Usually when its a big time mask match it's to put over the bigger guy, but they have used to repackage a wrestler when they feel he has become stale. But yes it's all predetermined. Big luchadores do lose their masks tho. Many of the Los Villanos, Blue Panther, Rey Mysterio Jr., Juventud Guerrera, Konnan, etc. have lost their masks.

A Mask Vs Mask or Mask Vs Hair match is usually the biggest pay day for a wrestler in Mexico, specially the loosing wrestler. Basically the promoter offers the wrestler X amount of money to drop the mask, he can either accept and get a good pay day, or he can decline and keep on going with his mask. Status, experience, or popularity don't really factor into the equation. Top stars have lost their mask(Blue Panther), Young Up and Comers(Mictlan), established stars(Universon 2000), some loose it at the end of their careers, etc. It all depends on the individual wrestler, there is no golden rule when it comes to dropping your mask. Some guys like Shocker go on to bigger and better things, other guys fade away with out their mask. Some guys, like Silver King(Same guy from WCW, now in AAA) for example, go back to their mask after a while.

ANY ONE KNOW THE RULES FOR PUTTING A THE SAME MASK BACK ON. I WAS WATCHING A DOCUMENTARY(LUCHA LOCO) AND ACCORDING TO IT BOX Y LUCHA SAYS THAT AFTER LOOSING THE MASK IN MEXICO U HAVE TO WAIT 5 YEARS TO PUT IT BACK ON. ANY ONE HEARD ANYTHING SIMILAR OR DIFFERENT???? Rules dont apply where I live (los angeles) guys who have lost the mask come up here and they are wearing it.

Oh and Mitclan is someone who I think made a mistake taking the $$$$ i really liked his mask and dont think he is, well I wouldnt be able to pick him out of a line up.

there are certain rules for it but honestly they aren't enforced anymore. there are certain places that say if you lose your mask in a certain arena you can never wear it there again, etc. but Box y Lucha also just suspended Konnan from Lucha Libre as well and look how that was enforced. lol

Mictlan is a very good wrestler but you're right since he lost his mask he hasn't done a whole lot of anything.

the actual rule that were speaking of states that a man can remask 5 years after losing his mask, but only under a new mask/name. Again, it's rarely followed.

This is the case of Pentagon, he lost his mask to Octagon some while ago and now he returned as Pentagon Black.

We have actually had 3 official Pentagons(well Pentagons that went trough AAA im sure more guys have used the mask)
1. Jesús Andrade Salas
the first one got hurt pretty bad so he had to leave I believe that he is also used the Espanto mask

2.José Mercado López Pentagon Black
Im guessing he changed to Pentagon Black when he left AAA. He lost the mask to santo and is married to Gran Hamadas daughter Xochilt. Never lost mask to Octagon(well not to my knowledge)

3. Pentagon 3 Ricardo Moreno Antonio
Was the one who lost it to Octagon.

The remasking can also be attributed to financial disputes like how Super Astro went back to wearing his mask because he claimed he was never paid for losing it.

I didnt think the luchadores were allowed to put a mask back on after losing it. I read somewhere that Mysterio dosnt wear his mask when on tour in Mexico since he got beaten by Nash in a Hair vs Mask match during WCW's peak period.

there has been several instances of luchadores putting their mask on. Silver King being the most recent.

y'all be sure to check my column this week, I give my thoughts on this issue and some statements that Silver King made this week that didn't sit too well with me.
