Ill Nino's "Enigma" without a doubt. I am a huge fan and this album hasn't disapointed me at all. I also just got Rev Theory's new album "Light It Up" which rocks.
Can I also mention Seether's album "Finding Beauty In Negetive Spaces" which although released very late last year is getting lots of play much to my wife's chagrin who doesn't share the love I have for it

Oh yeah, the Offspring's new album is awesome!

By the way, this album took two years to record. Noodles of the Offspring reckons its because they wanted to call their last album "Chinese Democracy" and now they are cursed!

As far as my own personal taste goes, the best album I've bought so far has to be Poets of The Fall - Revolution Roulette. Awesome band.

The Verve - 'Forth'

While I was a bit apprehensive about The Verve coming back, they've most definitely proven themselves with their Live performances, particularly at Glastonbury. As for the album itself, it's actually pretty good, combining some of the songwriting of the later Verve stuff with a sound that harkens back to their earlier 'Shoegazing' style, making it both an evolution and a retrospection for The Verve.

Basically, in my opinion, this, and the new Oasis album, is one of the few bright spots in the music scene right now.

Death Magnetic is a good album the music is excelent. As Mike Portnoy stated that's the album that should have come after ...And Justice for all. Hands down the best Metallica album in 20 years. The only reason why I wouldn't considere it album of the year is the poor mixing. And even worse the guitar hero version of the album has a better and proper mixing.

I'm a heavy metal fan but my ears get very tired when I listen Death Magnetic. That doesn't happen when I listen their first 4 albums which are really heavy. Or when I listen to Dream Theater's Train of Thought album which is also heavy.

For me The Bedlam in Goliath still my album of the year by far. It is loud...very loud but the mix IMO is superb. Death Magnitic will be number 2.

See, I don't see the big deal about the loudness. I don't think it's too bad, that's why God invented the volume knob. Then again, I've not heard other versions like the Guitar Hero one.

The main problem is not that is "loud" becuase as you say there is a volume knob. The problem is that when music is mixed at a correct level such as the call of ktulu or master of puppets there are a lot of details that you can hear and appreciate. Details that make songs great; as you add more volume the music it is easier to hear them and plesant as an audio experience. However those details are lost when you have a mixing like Death Magnetic where the volume of the mix is already way too loud; so when you add more volume it gets painful to hear.

I know a lot of people don't really care but as an audio experience these album could have been even better. Take Porcupine tree song "Blackest eye" the intro is really heavy. However it's plesant to listen to it as it is not just mixed at its loudest.

Coco, agree with you there. I really love Death Magnetic, really dig the style Metallica have embraced with this album. But, it is a little hard on the ears. Saying that it is still number one at present as far as I am concerned, but I do keep returning to Ill Nino's "Enigma" which I would say in the long term, I will get more out of than "Death Magnetic"

I just got a hold of King'sof Leon "Only By The Night" After only a couple of plays, I am really hooked on this. I have playing in the shop at the moment and I am really impressed with the maturity these guys are showing. I thought their previous album "Because of the Times" was quite good but this new effort wins hands down.

the guitar hero mix
is DM the way metallica intended it to be
there is awesome bass tones
drums that sound much better
metallica got screwed in the mastering of this album
its not the mix itself but the master that is bad

guitar hero is 6 channels mixed and mastered
there is much more clarity and detail in the songs
and dynamics much more defined rhythm section

i highly recommend you find it and download it
just to hear the differences

i might also be willing to upload it
if you are interested

This video helped me understand how to explain the disconfort I felt when listening to the last album Dream Theater released called Systematic Chaos. The same happens with DM. Now don't get me wrong; creatively speaking DM is by far the best metalica album has released since de 80s. But they've got to find better sound engineers.

i think that the people to blame are... METALLICA. here's why - for every album they recorded, they were there in person during the mixing and mastering process. but for this album they were in dallas for ozzfest weekend. during that set the band had announced that the album was just finished being mastered. had they been there for the process it wouldn't have turned out the way it did.

i have to disagree most bands including metallica are not present during mastering
that is a craft all to its own and is usually left to the contracted company to handle.
The mix is excellent... the master is way to loud and it kills much of the dynamics and bass tones. Some of the coolest little recording details.. the little things that you hear that happen naturally as certain takes are printed are lost in some cases on this CD. I cant think of many instances where major acts are present during the mastering process.

I hate quoting myself, but I just want to add to this post rather than edit it.

A month on, and I still haven't stopped listening to Kings of Leon. This album is huge, my number one of the year.

I just got a hold of Slipknot's All Hope Is Gone and must say I am overall a little disappointed with this effort. Apart from the insanely awesome "Psychosocial" and maybe one or two other tracks, there really isn't much oomph to this album. Maybe I should start a new thread for the most disappointing albums of the year. Yeah I'll do that.

"All Hope is Gone" by Slipknot... God this one grew on me, I am warming up to the lighter tracks, like "Dead Memories", "Snuff", and "Til We Die". But the heavier ones, are very, VERY heavy. And they owned Mayhem 'Fest in Atlanta.

"Death Magnetic" by Metallica, this is my first Metallica album, and I'm impressed and this one sees a lot of rotations in my CD player.

as for rap... I haven't listened to many albums, I want to give Jeezy's and Game's new ones a listen... I'm sick of Lil Wayne, so I'm doubting i'll be DL'd "The Carter 3"/

In no particular order, my favorites this year were:

Dr. Dog - Fate
Beach House - Devotion
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Crystal Stilts - Alight of Night
m83 - Saturdays = Youth

I also thought that Chad Vangaalen, Fleet Foxes, Wolf Parade and Cadence Weapon had good albums. Also, Crystal Castles put out a really cool album but all of the songs on it had been on the net for over a year, so I don't see it as much of a 2008 album.

Man, I saw Flogging Molly live at the Reading Festival back in 2006. The show was in a huge tent, and the entire thing was like a party. Everybody was just Irish dancing, totally drunk and on whatever.

Fun stuff.
